Positive attitude right!? Today I started reading the Runner’s World Forums that helped me start running in 2008. Reading one post and replying triggered the urge to quit smoking again. Next I have to start running. With the temperature outside in the 90’s and humidity in the same range I have to wait for a treadmill. I have one available to me but I just have to go get it then drag it to the basement and set it up. By Monday July 12, 2010 almost two exact years after the first time I started running I will begin Week 1 Day 1 of the C25K plan. This puts me on track for September 6th to be running a full 5K. I know I may have to do a week or two over but I am determined to run the Turkey Trot (8K) on Thanksgiving this year (I missed it when I was running before).
Encouraging comments are always welcome.

Last year about this time I abruptly stopped running. No excuses I just started smoking again and always said that once I quit again I will start running again. A year later and I am still smoking. All that work for nothing. BUT, I am feeling the itch again. I remember when I was first starting out with the Couch to 5K, I wanted someone to run with me but nobody wanted to. Today people all over the neighborhood are running, many started with the C25K, a few just ran a 10K this weekend. Where were they when I needed support to keep running!?
It comes down to you have to do it for yourself. Feeling the itch again I hope this is the start of a new relationship with running. One that will last far longer than my first introduction.
Encouraging comments welcome!

I went golfing for the first time in 20 years Saturday and had a great time! My game was off but I kept up with those in my foursome. I would usually end up 10 yards right and five yards behind the best ball. We played at the benefit in my son’s name. This year the money went to us but following years we will be donating the money to children’s charities.
I could tell how stiff I am because of my lack of exercise lately. I could feel my muscles tighten with each swing, especially in my back. I really need to get back to running! It was still nice to get outside and hit a few balls. I only lost two in the water.

There is no hiding the fact that I have not been running or anything for that matter. I lost interest for a while BUT I can feel it coming back. Each day I want to jump back into it I get side tracked and lose my opportunity. We have the benefit this weekend so things are a bit crazy here, leaving me almost no time for myself. I have been working through my lunch time and not even eating properly. Luckily I have not gained any weight but I am sure my muscles are suffering. I know when I get back I too will suffer. It just means I have to set new goals and work harder to keep them. After a year of steady working out I cannot believe I let it slip away. I think the proper thing to do is to focus on what I will do and not on what I did or did not do to that got me to this stagnation.
I hope to be posting my progress again soon. As always please comment, I like the encouragement and the kick in the pants when I need it. By the way, that is my son Riley in the photo hiding from my camera.

Not since running, since I have posted anything. My workout has been hit and miss anyway. I run a bit here or live a weight there but just cannot seem to get into any good routine. —
I just thought for about two minutes on how to transition into why I have been so inconsistent with my runs/workouts and could not think of a good way. I even have to prepare myself to type the words. So the next sentence I will just come out with it.
My five month old son died April 28th. They told me SIDS and that there was nothing I could have done. I fed him, burped him, held him a bit and laughed with him. I gave him his pacifier and laid him down in his bed. Two hours later my wife went to feed him for his night time feeding like every night and found him. I vividly remember the hours that followed but wish I did not. I can even see… I will not go further I don’t know who reads this, besides this is about fitness. We did donate his heart valves to Upstate New York Transplant Services. I called a few weeks after and they told me that they can be stored for a rather long time and they were going to be used in a baby who needs the surgery. While this is good and I am happy that another baby will live it doesn’t make anything better.
So counseling and meeting and just going home to be with my family has taken a lot away from my exercises. But I am getting back into a better groove. It doesn’t really help anything, I just have a lot of time to think and I always think of that night. I am told it will change eventually but it hasn’t. I lost some weight but gained it back again so no change there.

Cole Sleeping
So one day / hour at a time for me.

Today was a good day on the Elliptical. There is a random option that tells you to lean back, squat, fast, push with arms etc. It is fun and really gets you moving. So I did 20 minutes of that. Next was abs and some push ups. I did week 1 day 1 of the 100 push-up challenge. It was rather easy since I am doing the middle level. I did enough for the high impact level but I do not want to fail like last time so I will go gradually. Maybe at some point I will switch.
I found out today what I was doing wrong in my diet. I noticed through the help of runnerworld.com’s forums that I am eating way too many carbs and not enough protein / fats / veggies. It’s funny because I LOVE fruits and veggies. Well, now that the obvious was pointed out to me I can make adjustments. Today for lunch I had steamed shrimp with veggies! YUM!
