C25K Week 1 Day 1
Aug 13th, 2008 by tmpadmin
Last night at 11:00pm I laced up my sneakers, slapped on a watch, grabbed my MP3 player with the DJ Beatsmith Podrunning interval training podcasts, and headed out of the house to start my C25K plan. I finally overcame one of my fears, what other will think if they see me running. Granted, going at 11:00pm not many people will notice I’m out there but I know a few did and I didn’t even think about it, I was focused on what I was doing.
The walk was okay, I am used to walking. When the first minute run was nearing I was getting nervous. I never ran deliberately for more than 10-20 seconds. The podcasts are nice, they have a tone to tell you when you should switch gears from walking to running back to walking. The tone came and I started to run. Rather slowly but I was running. My legs felt tight (yeah, more stretching), wind was blowing through my ears (huh?). It wasn’t easy I was happy to hear the tone to slow back to a walk. I could tell my heart-rate was up, not too high but good. I then noticed it was coming back down. Perfect, this is what should happen. What’s that person do up so late on his computer? Wow nice moon (in the sky). Again the tone to run. I picked up the pace and was again running. This time I could feel my legs burning but it was easier. Not much just a bit. Plus, this time I actually preferred the run over the walk. I felt like I was gliding, skimming across the sidewalk. With only a minute per running interval that was over quickly. Walking again, I tried to slow down my pace. A little slower walk may allow the runs to continue to be enjoyable. It wasn’t until the second last run interval that I started feeling a bit winded very winded. I already covered 1.5 miles and the cool-down would take me back home to complete my 2 mile goal.
My legs were already sore as I walked up my driveway, sweating, tired and thinking; “do I really want to run again?”. I went in and took a shower to cool off. Had a snack and a glass of water (I should have had more, I woke up with a slight headache that could be from dehydration. This morning I am already thinking about tomorrow’s run, day two of C25K, only 24 days to go! I’m not focusing on just completing the plan really, I expect to have to repeat a week or two, one step at a time and I took my first.
