[...] My last run I was pushed to move at a 10:00 pace after only 1/2 mile. Not pushed but it was the general air in the gym. I finished at that pace. Wait, I just noticed I ran at a 10:55 pace. Something is wrong. Well, I guess the blog entry was correct. I check my run log and it shows a 10:50 pace. So why not delete all that useless information? Because I ran three miles today at 10:00 pace and a little better. My total time running was 29:46 for the three miles. I finished the few seconds to make an even 30 minute run. My official pace was 9:56/mile. I did struggle the last 1/2 mile, that is why it is not an even 10:00 / mile I upped the speed a bit so I could just finish already! Next run will be better.
[...] Today I ran at a 12:00 pace for 2.66 miles. Actually it was what I ran in 30 minutes. I wasn’t doing anything other than just running. I really needed it today. Work was a bit crazy and it is really nice to be able to take a lunch and run. Today is my “take it easy” day. I have yet to settle into a real training plan. I was actually going to walk today but the run took over. I need a rest day but since I get two on the weekends I cannot justify a break during the week, plus I had Tuesday off for Lunch.
Once I saw the doctor and made an effort to not worry about my breathing I started to feel better. I am sure a lot has to do with anxiety and a drastic change in lifestyle. Since I changed the way I think about smoking and quitting smoking I have experienced this less and less.

Maybe another major contribution to helping me overcome shortness of breath is the amount of exercise I am now doing. I run 4x per week and do a quick (very light weight) circuit training day for toning and strength. I tend to bulk up quickly if I lift too much. I want to stay lean so I am careful. So far I've lost 14 pounds since I started running just over a month ago. My goal is to lose 30 by late spring. I'm off-topic now. But I believe exercise is the key to getting breathing back to normal. Good luck!

Hi,

Just to let you know i am into 7 months quitting and i still have sob.

The only moment when i can breath normally is in the morning just when i woke up but still on the bed, as soon as i prepare myself to tackle a new day of work then the feeling is back again.

I am not so sure if it it is anxiety but i am almost certain my body is in the process of changing, towards a good or bad way i am yet to find out.

Let's keep this blog for years and make it a journey of us who suffer sob in quitting. :)

After seeing the doctor yesterday about this (and other things) he said "Your body is adjusting to not getting a drug anymore, it will go away". No meds needed, nothing is wrong with me, I can run!

Oh, my BP was 122/60 which he said is perfect! Pulse was 100 at the time but I was excited. Normal is 78, a bit high but that should come down with exercise and diet.

What did your doctor put you on? My wife is a Doctor of pharmacy and has panic disorder so she knows what she is talking about with this.

If it is xanax (most common) you will sleep! Actually most will make you sleep. I was going to talk about the mechanism of how the drug works but I don't want to be even .1% wrong. Essentially as I understand it, all panic meds will make you sleepy. The trick is to find the dose that keeps you awake but also controls the panic. Hang in there and talk to your doctor - phone call will usually do for adjusting meds. If he/she does tell you to keep on the same dose, don't worry. You will adjust to the dose and the sleepiness will go away. And remember these are serious drugs no matter what anyone says (I know this one). If you quit them cold turkey like you did your smoking you COULD have seizures. If you search the web for the med you have you can find a ton of information. Always talk to your doctor about meds you are taking, or your pharmacist. They are always willing to help you but be nice they deal with a lot of crabby people. :)

I will post in a comment here or another full post what my doctor says and how he suggest I handle it.

Congratulations on quitting smoking!!! If you are like me it is gonna be a weird couple of weeks. Not bad... One strange thing I have noticed is dizzyness. I think I read that, because for so long my brain is used to not getting as much oxygen, now that my lungs are working much better I have an abundance of oxygen causing some mild dizziness. I can really feel it with deep breaths relaxing exercise. This will go away as my body adjusts back to healthy status.

Feel free to comment on your progress, I like the idea that I am not alone in quitting.
